MYSTRIUM/Art´s Mystrious

Strandverket Konsthall, Kungälv

Mystrium/Art’s Mystrious is a diverse, quirky and different exhibition that does not abide by the usual boundaries of the artistic world. The exhibition shines a light on the overlooked and parallel art sphere made up by self-taught and/or anonymous artists – and hence broadens and deepens the discussion around what is considered art.

The exhibition showcases a selection of Nordic self-taught artists whose common denominator is a waywardness and passion for discovery through the expression of visual art. As such, the exhibition puts personal creation in the centre – as a manifestation for everyone’s right to creativity – while also demonstrating the high artistic quality that exists beyond the established framework. Many of the artworks are difficult to categorise as the selection of materials can be surprising – such as old tractor parts, copper-clad cement, medicine jars, tree branches and embroidered textiles, but painting and sculpture is also found.

The exhibition title ”Art’s Mystrious” comes from a quote that one of the artists had cut into a wooden board: "Art’s Mystrious – let it stay that way ". In other words, it is not a misspelling, rather the artist considers that art is more mystical than mysterious.
